DVD Care Essentials

Taking care of your DVDs is key to ensuring that they serve as unfailing data storage device. But often one does not know how to go about it. Here's a list of what to do and what not to do.

Storing your DVDs

You have to be careful to store your DVDs where they won't be exposed to extremes of temperature or humidity. Temperature and humidity can affect the failure rate of the medium. Store your DVDs vertically, not horizontally. Use a case that keeps light off the disc. Sunlight (or any indoor lights that supply ultraviolet radiation) can deteriorate the dye used in DVD-R and DVD+R discs, making them fail well before their time. The dye used in DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs is not light sensitive. However, the heat buildup that sunlight can cause damage to any recordable DVD -- RW or R.

Handling your DVDs

Try to keep your fingers off the data side of the disc. Fingerprints are actually more likely to cause read errors than most light scratches, by causing the laser to lose focus and intensity. The builtin error correction of recordable DVDs can handle light scratches fairly well. It's the deep scratches that reach into the data layers of the disc that will cause you lost data.

Labeling your DVDs

Putting adhesive labels on DVDs is a bad idea as they are susceptible balance problems caused by a DVD that has a label that is not equally distributed around the disc. Various printing technologies are also capable of causing balance problems for recordable DVDs. The safest labeling solution for ordinary recordable DVDs is the same as for recordable CDs. Use a pen specially designed for labelling recordable media, write on the label side of the disc, and only write on the clear portion of the hub of the disc.

Blu-ray Disc

Sony's first generation Blu-ray Disc drive for the computer offers the best of all worlds by recording virtually all BD/DVD/CD disc formats in one internal half height package. The BWU-100A drive supports recording both 50GB and 25GB BD-R (write once) and BD-RE (rewritable) discs, as well as 4.7 GB DVD+R/+RW/RAM, 8.5GB DVD+R Double/Dual Layer, and CD-R/-RW discs. Up to 4 hours of 1080 HD video can be stored on a single dual layer 50G BD disc, a perfect solution for keeping your High Definition video shot on an HDV camcorder in native HD. Naturally, BD discs with up to 50GB of online, random access storage are great for computer backup/data storage applications too. Since the BWU-100A can record DVDs and CDs too, all your burning projects can be handled by a single drive. Comprehensive Cyberlink ® software suite is included to author BD and DVD discs as well as general disc burning for BD/DVD/CDs. Works with Windows ® XP and Windows 2000 PCs.

Blu-ray Disc is the next generation of optical storage with an emphasis on High Definition video playback, High Definition gaming, and information storage. BD discs have the same disc diameter of a CD or DVD, but offer up to 50GB of storage per disc and are extremely durable. Blu-ray Disc is backed by all the major Hollywood studios and most electronics and computer makers, making it the natural successor of DVD in the High Definition arena.

Playback of commercial movies on Blu-ray Disc (BD-ROM) requires additional software/hardware not included with this product. Requires compatible high-definition display for high definition playback. Playback of AACS protected media may require an HDCP compliant output and HDCP compliant display. Transfer speeds vary and are dependent upon host hardware.

First HD DVD writer for desktops

Toshiba  has reportedly announced its first HD DVD writer "SD-H903A" for desktop PCs.

According to Toshiba, this is the world's first dedicated HD DVD Writer for the Desktop that offers all the functionality of a super multi-drive, with high performance, high-speed read and write to HD DVD, and to standard DVD and CD discs.

Using this, consumers can capture content, edit home videos, and create vast digital content repositories for movies, music, and photos.

The new "SD-H903A" incorporates a blue-violet laser diode that can read and write to HD DVD-R discs, and offers support for high-density HD DVD-ROM discs, including high definition movie and video images.

Taking advantage of the shared physical structure of HD DVD discs and standard DVD discs, it reads and writes to HD DVD-R discs, and to standard DVD and CD discs, using an optical pick-up head with a single objective lens.

Toshiba believes that designed for single-bay desktop PCs, the new "SD-H903A" is the perfect solution for professional high-definition content creation. It allows PC and CE (Consumer Electronics) manufacturers to make a smooth and affordable transition to high-definition offerings.

Moreover, the "SD-H903A" features a Serial ATA (SATA) interface for superior performance. It is fully compliant with the EU's RoHS directive, which came into force in July 2006.

The new Toshiba SD-H903A will be featured at the ongoing International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2007 in Las Vegas. Sample shipments are slated to begin this month onwards. Pricing will be revealed upon availability.
